Seriously, people STOP quoting yourself with every social media post!!!
I don’t know how to say that nicely, but I’m going to repeat it AGAIN. If you’ve said it within the past five posts on your social media – DO NOT REPEAT IT.
Recently, I’ve been noticing more and more that the same people, post the same thoughts, over and over and over, on social media until I want to puke.
Maybe it’s just me… Perhaps, I’m overreacting to marketing annoyances, but I doubt it. The reality is, most of us read the same people day in and day out, and if we’ve seen it more than three or four times, we start scrolling past it. And we really scroll by it faster and faster, until we miss seeing it if you add something different… Don’t repeat the same post over and over. We start ignoring you.
That’s why “Check out my website www.link.com” doesn’t work. Nobody checks that link. Most people scroll on by, and ignore that link. So why on God’s green and growing earth would you ask the same simple minded question over and over again?
Okay – now that my rant is over, I’ll move on to the 5 things you should NEVER do when marketing on social media – besides repeat your posts over and over and over.
1 – Don’t tag everyone that was tagged on the original post.
Okay… there’s a hot point here, that everyone should be able to capture, understand, and comprehend, even on a Monday. If you’re tagged in a post, and you copy everyone else who is tagged in the same post, and tag them again – that post is going to post twice to their wall. And – please read the above rant about duplicate postings.
2 – Don’t hesitate to shamelessly promote yourself.
Can you make it sound fun, original, and interesting? If you can, promote yourself shamelessly and tag a friend or two in your self promotion. Send out an invitation for the whole world to come watch your interview with the next great interviewer in the world, because you taught them how to interview! Show off your latest creation with a joke, or witty introduction. Better yet, go post on all your friend’s walls and ask them if they have any idea about the amazing new post you plastered on your blog?
Don’t forget to add a picture and the link so everyone can find your blog.
3 – Every Now and Then post NO promotions.
There’s a basic rule that one out of every seven posts can have a self-promotion or link to your website, or other promotion in it. One in every seven posts. Now, unless you post like – well, like I do – the chances are pretty good that you should not be posting a self-promotion every day. If you’re posting 3 – 5 times a day, you should probably not be posting a self promotion more than once a week. Maybe twice. But let’s be honest – even then, it should be something that adds value to your readers lives, and your social media site. Make your posts interesting!
4 – STOP POSTING CRAP.
I know, I’m not supposed to scream, but seriously if 99 percent of your posts have absolutely no value and you really believe people are reading your self serving promotions. You’re dreaming.
You want to know what you can post instead? How about a quote from your blog posts? How about a solution that will help your readers accomplish something of value? What about a discussion about possible solutions in your niche? How about a discussion about how they can bring up discussion levels on social media?
5 – Don’t skimp on encouragement.
Encouraging, motivational posts are almost always a positive influence. If you can do an encouraging post and give your reader something of real value – like a great blog post with amazingly unique ideas to read and think over – do that. Give them something encouraging that has some meat in it. One of my favorite posts this past week was a graphic with an encouraging statement on the graphic and above it, the poster said, “Life changes begin with a different choice today!” (The meme below is built on that message.)
It caught my eye, because the message was so revealing, and the choice to change my personal situation was staring at me… All I had to do was change today.
Be the change you need in your own life, today. Do whatever it takes to shift those gears, increase your speed, or go a different direction. Be the change you need today!
