When my recent high school graduate, writer, almost adult son was a little boy, he needed almost constant contact. Frequent hugs, hand holding, lap sitting, and loving was the norm, and he just couldn’t hardly stand it when I was busy with a client and he couldn’t climb onto my lap and just ‘hold me’ while I worked.
Over the past several days, I’ve been regaled by the tales of a dimpled red headed little boy’s oral campaign to abscond with the tooth fairies riches, via his mother’s facebook status updates. These reminded me of my own experience with a brave little soldier and his experience with the dental goddess…
There’s something miraculous about having your youngest child graduating from high school. It isn’t the usual concept of facing an empty nest… I don’t feel like my nest is going to be ‘empty’ any time soon. But there is a definite feeling that I’ve accomplished something of importance, something of value, something that isn’t yet recognized, but will be forever in existence. The joy of watching four miracles grow from dirty diapers to (shhhh) dirty jokes and then move beyond the silliness of puberty to something resembling adulthood. I’m reminded that pride
