Driving traffic is all well and good, but you have to keep them longer. And bring them back. Did you ever wonder what brings people back to your site time-after-time?
I’m a big fan of the search engine, magnet process of building a website, I try things, and see what works. Sometimes it’s fairly easy to bring a customer back to your site, with just great content. But other times, you might have to hunt them down and drag them back… Of course, if that’s the case, you might not want to bother… Just let them go and find new viewers. But what does bring them back?
But what if… You could keep them longer, and bring them back? Willingly?
Try Some Attraction Action!
When I was a bit younger, like back in my early 20’s before babies, I was in a situation where I had to “hitch hike” into town. I’d tried several other options, but ultimately, to get to town – many miles away – I was either going to walk or hitch a ride. Back then it was a bit safer to hitch hike than I would believe it is now, even though my mother had warned me about all the bad things that might happen. So, there I stood on the side of the road and nobody was stopping.
I really didn’t have a long time to catch a ride, it was getting dark… So the next vehicle that came along, instead of my thumb, I stuck out my leg. It was fully covered! This girl wore more jeans than dresses… But the man pulled his pickup truck over and laughing, I ran up to the door, and got in. He was laughing as hard as I was, and asked me what that was all about… So, I told him. I figured you couldn’t see my thumb it was too little, but you weren’t going to miss my size ten clod hoppers. He drove me to town, and we laughed most of the way.
He said, he might have to bring them back, when he returned home that night… Meaning my size 10 clod hoppers, since I needed to take repairs back to my vehicle.
But I remembered that he noticed!
That’s called attraction action. You don’t have to show off your thunder thighs and clod hoppers to catch a wink, but sometimes you may need to entice the viewers to come see what you’ve got.
But then you have to figure out what to do to keep them longer, and bring them back.
1 – Be About THEM.
This isn’t really complicated, seriously. I know you want to make it all about YOU on YOUR website, but you can’t. You’ve got to be ALL about them. ALL about THEM. They really don’t want to know about you. They want to know what you’re going to do for them. So show them.
Now that you’ve got their attention with your PEEP Show legs, get serious and start asking questions. What is it that really attracted you to this site? Are you interested in humor? My humor can be pretty bad, but I hope you laughed. Did you laugh? What is it you need from me?
Ask what will keep them longer, and bring them back.
Do you need to know more about how to drive traffic to your website? And maybe how to keep them there for a while? Did you see the article about commenting on other people’s blogs? Would that help you bring in some traffic?
Seriously. Okay, I’ve used that word, like… three times already. But you know what I mean, it’s easy to get caught up in your own issues, but you have to focus on your customers. So, talk to them. Put one of them in the chair by your computer desk and talk to that person as you’re writing. And make the context of your content about the person who will be reading your content.
It’s all psycho-babble anyways, but it’s THEIR psycho-babble. So, put them in the driver’s seat.
2 – Activate Them From The Start.
Readers are seeking “something” and they’ve landed on your website. Your website must have a purpose – if not… Why not? If you do have a purpose, direct your reader toward taking action on that purpose.
Give them information. Give them answers and solutions. Give them direction.
Simply put. Tell your reader what to do next.
Give them a clear, decisive, directive so they know what you want them to do. It’s really as easy as pointing to the first link where they will get what they came for and showing them to Click on it. There’s your key…
Tell them what to do. Give them a form to fill out. It will keep them on your site longer, and when you get their email address, you can bring them back.
3 – Use Site Options
Widgets and plugins are useful on the back end of your site, but they’re also helpful to your readers to follow up on the next phase… Where should they go from here? If there’s a widget or plugin that will help direct your reader to the right spot, that’s a good thing to use.
How about a widget to increase traffic to your most valuable content?
When you open up your links within your website, to include the top posts in keyword areas, you give readers an opportunity to find more information in areas they’re already seeking. This funnel driving aspect of keyword optimization increases traffic generation to your best selling, best working content.
But why would anyone want to read what you write? And what are they going to get out of it?
Bring them back…
When I started writing, I thought I had to have “real value” in every single item I wrote, so I pushed the content. I pushed the marketable aspects of writing, to the point that I forgot to tell my story.
I forgot to let people in on who Jan Verhoeff really is, because I thought I wasn’t interesting enough to captivate an audience. Then I realized through some serious reading reviews, that who I am matters at least half as much as what I offer my readers. That may sound a bit narcissistic, but it isn’t.
Let me show you…
Anyone can offer you marketing materials. Absolutely ANYONE who has taken a marketing class can share information with you and bring you to the marketing table fully informed. But not everyone can identify with that basic scrubbed down marketing information… And to be honest, why should they?
If they’d wanted that kind of skinless meat, they could have taken a college class. The reason people come to my page, look me up online, and come back to read what I write is the story. They want to know how people like me can achieve so much… They want to know how I overcame my failures…. What they really want to know is if I have a secret that’s different than the textbook variety marketing course… And you know what? I have some really BIG secrets. And I know a lot of ways to overcome the failures that we ram into on a daily basis. I know how to find success, when I need to find it. And how to make it all work out at the end of the day. Because I’ve done those things.
The stories bring them back, over and over again. And that is my biggest secret!
